company profile
House of Embroidery began as a humble home-enterprise in 1995. Today it stands as an established entrepreneurial success that produces multi-coloured hand-dyed perle, rayon, stranded (mouline) and silk embroidery threads as well as silk ribbons. All of our cotton fibres are 100% cotton and our 100% silk ribbon is available in three different widths. Many of our colours are colour-coordinated across all of our fibre ranges. As an embroiderer, I am aware of the varying needs of fellow embroiders and needleworkers alike. Stitching with House of Embroidery threads is an opportunity to create something alive and unique. To embroider is to dream and, like all art forms, the artist should never be limited or constrained. Our colour-coordinated ranges allow you to experience the same unique colour across various fibres – whether you desire the high sheen of rayon or the sheer decadence of silk.
South African-born and South African-proud, the House of Embroidery factory team currently consists of 13 dedicated employees. We have been fortunate to have retained many of our original employees. As our company has grown, so the independence, financial stability and personal empowerment of each of our members have also increased. As a fair-trade company, House of Embroidery prides itself on the sustained empowerment of previously unskilled South Africans. The majority of the company team comprises of women, many of whom were previously unemployed and who currently serve as the main breadwinners in their respective families. Enforced with a significant and loyal local market, foreign markets for House of Embroidery products have also been established in the Northern Americas, Europe, Africa, Australasia and the Middle East.
Quality and reliability are our foremost concerns. High quality European cotton thread and Japanese silk threads and Japanese silk ribbons are imported in an un-dyed state. These fibres are then hand-dyed in South Africa, following strict dye recipes created with European dyes. Cared for correctly, our products are colour-fast, light-fast and wash-fast, please view our ‘dyeing and caring’ section for answers to any of your thread-care concerns.
